Adventure Recreation Trip FAQs

Why do you require a deposit when the trip is free?

While most trips are free for students, Florida Southern College does incur costs by offering adventure recreation trips. Requiring a deposit ensures that students who register are fully committed to attend the trip. This policy supports our effort to be fiscally responsible and enables our staff to offer trip slots to other students if they become available.

Do I have to pay the deposit in cash? Can I use a credit card, Venmo, or another form of payment?

Deposits must be made in cash. This requirement is in place because you will receive your deposit back when you check in before departing on the trip.

Can I drive my own vehicle?

For liability reasons, all participants attending adventure recreation trips must travel with the group. Travel is typically on board 56 passenger coach busses contracted through Small World Tours or 15 passenger mini busses owned and operated by Florida Southern College.

Can friends or family meet us at the trip destination and participate with us?

Our trips typically utilize a guide service or third party company. While your friends or family could plan their own outing during the same time we will be at a specific destination, we are not able to include them in our logistical planning and they would have to pay for any experiences on their own through the outfitter.

I have special equipment related to the activity we are doing. Am I allowed to bring it?

You are permitted to bring any specialized equipment for the activity, provided it would be deemed appropriate to have on campus and there is enough space on the bus. However, the Florida Southern College Adventure Recreation Coordinator and representatives from any third-party outfitter, guide service, or company used for your trip reserve the right to deny the use of personal equipment for safety reasons.

I registered for the trip, but I can no longer attend. Is it possible for my friend to go in my place?

We maintain a waitlist for all trips. If you are unable to attend, please inform the Adventure Recreation Coordinator or another representative at the Hollis Wellness Center, so we can make your spot available for the next student on the waitlist. If there are no students actively on the waitlist, we would be happy to let a student you know take your place.

What are the chances of being moved off of the waitlist?

In the event our trip has reached capacity, a waitlist will be created. Since we are utilizing the lottery system in the spring of 2025, the initial waitlist order will also be determined through a lottery system. Anyone who elects to join the waitlist after the lottery day will be added to the bottom of the list. While it is common for a handful of students to determine they are no longer able to attend, it is not something we are able to predict. If you are moved from the waitlist to an active trip participant spot, you will be notified as soon as possible.

What is standby?

Sometimes, a student who registered for a trip and made a deposit may not show up on the day of the trip. This can happen for various reasons, leading to an available spot. Students on the waitlist who still wish to participate can arrive during the check-in period, ready to take the place of any student who does not arrive on time. If there is an opening, the student who has the highest priority on the waitlist among those on standby will be awarded the spot on the trip. Any student opting for standby must complete the Florida Southern College Pre-Trip Information Sheet and Waiver prior to checking in. This can be done anytime during regular business hours at the Hollis Wellness Center.

Will I be able to leave items on the bus while we participate in the adventure?

Yes, you will be able to leave items on the bus while you participate in the outing. However, you likely won’t be able to access the bus during the activity.
