Florida Southern College’s Department of Campus Safety and Security is proud to announce that Canine Officer Dean placed first in the region for indoor narcotics detection at the recent U.S.P.C.A., Inc., Region 1 Field Trials.
Dean, a Colombian black labrador and sworn officer with the Lakeland Police Department (LPD), competed against 60 canine teams consisting of both detection and patrol dogs. The trials took place in Orange Beach, Alabama, from February 8 through February 12. Demonstrating exceptional precision, Dean placed seventh overall in the comprehensive narcotics events and secured the first-place spot in the indoor competition.
Stationed full-time at Florida Southern, Dean was brought into service as a proactive response to the global fentanyl outbreak. His presence serves as a vital deterrent, contributing to a safer environment for the college community. Since his arrival, the college has seen a measurable impact on student safety.
While Dean is high-performing in his duties, he has become a beloved fixture of the FSC community. Known for his fun-loving and playful personality, Dean enjoys spending time on campus and greeting students. This balance of rigorous security work and approachable demeanor allows him to serve as both a protector and a friendly face for the student body.
The Florida Southern Department of Campus Safety and Security continues to work in close coordination with LPD to maintain a secure campus environment. Dean is one of nine officers stationed on the campus full-time, representing the strong collaborative partnership between the College and local law enforcement.
