Jürgen Moltmann and Other Distinguished Speakers to Lecture on the Future of Christian Theology

A two-day series of lectures at Florida Southern College will bring together some of the world’s most illustrious theologians to give their views on the topic “The Future of Christian Theology.” 

Dr. Jürgen Moltmann, widely considered the world’s most influential living theologian, will give the concluding lecture in the series. Other speakers include respected thinkers who studied with Dr. Moltmann, such as Dr. Miroslav Volf, Dr. Douglas Meeks, and Dr. Nancy E. Bedford. The lectures promise to correlate human political and economic activity to the Christian message of hope and love.

The college’s annual Warren W. Willis Lecture in Religion is this year being combined with the inaugural P.M. Boyd Lecture in Evangelism to offer these Christian leaders the opportunity to share their thoughts on the future of theology. The lectures will be held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 28 and at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at FSC.

The lectures are free and open to the public.

Dr. Moltmann is the emeritus professor of systematic theology at the University of Tübingen and known for influential works that emphasize the relationship between suffering and hope, drawing upon his own experience as a prisoner of war during World War II. He is the author of more than 20 books, including Theology of Hope, The Crucified God, and most recently, Ethics of Hope.

Dr. Volf is the Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale University Divinity School and founding director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture. He is the author of more than 20 books, including Exclusion and Embrace and, most recently, Flourishing: Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World. His works are known for their emphasis on reconciliation in the midst of alienation and violence.

Dr. Meeks is the Cal Turner Chancellor Professor of Theology and Wesleyan Studies Emeritus at The Divinity School, Vanderbilt University. His research interests focus on the relation of Christian doctrine to economic, social, and political theory. He has authored or collaborated on 16 books, including Origins of the Theology of Hope and God the Economist: The Doctrine of God and Political Economy.

Dr. Bedford is the Georgia Harkness Professor of Applied Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She is the author of several books which focus on theologies of global feminist theories, Latin American theologies, Latino/Latina theologies in North America, and related topics.
