Unlocking the Magic of Florida
Aug 14, 2023
One of the best parts about attending college in Florida is being able to visit iconic places and having experiences that are unique to The Sunshine State.
Discover Florida, a campus organization under the Center for Student Involvement, partners with the Evett L. Simmons Center for Multicultural Appreciation and Hollis Wellness Center to enrich the college experience by offering cost-free and discounted trips to a variety of exciting destinations and events in Central Florida.
Ryan Prince, who helps to organize the trips explains that Discover Florida is dedicated to making Florida's excitement accessible to all students, regardless of financial constraints or travel limitations. “Our mission is to give our students the opportunity to enjoy experiences that may have been previously inaccessible to them due to cost or travel,” he said.
By removing barriers and providing exclusive travel opportunities, the program seeks to foster a sense of community, shared adventure, and lifelong memories.
The trips are a great way to explore Central Florida, but also meet new people, take a mental health day, and escape the responsibilities of being a college student for a few hours.
Something for Everyone
Trips organized by Discover Florida expose FSC students to some of Florida’s most popular theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios.
Students who sign up for the Disney Springs trip can spend a day enjoying an eclectic mix of unique shops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, and lively entertainment.
Those who are interested in learning more about Florida’s flora and fauna can visit Croc Encounters Reptile Park and Wildlife Center, a wildlife park in Tampa that gives guided tours, educates visitors, and offers close-up encounters with a range of reptiles.
For indoor fun, students can join Discover Florida on a trip to Dave & Buster's, a full-service restaurant and video arcade also located in Tampa.
Discover Florida also provides cultural experiences through trips to live performances at the Straz Center in Tampa and Orlando Shakes, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater that produces classic, contemporary, and children’s plays.
Several uniquely Florida events include trips to see Detroit Tigers play baseball at their spring training facility in Lakeland, annual festivals like the Florida Strawberry Festival, and annual holiday events like ICE! at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee.
