Tropical Ecology: Bimini Sharklab
Bimini, Bahamas
Oct 18 - Oct 24
Latin America - Marine Biology
Semester: Fall 2025
BIO3316 - 4 Credit Hours
Trip Leader: Dr. Gabriel Langford, glangford@flsouthern.edu
Do you love sharks and rays? Do you want hands-on experience at a marine biological field station? Do you want a once in a lifetime experience? This field course will introduce you to the ecology of a tropical region with a strong focus on the biology of sharks and rays at the world-famous Bimini Sharklab. While ecology can be taught in the classroom, it is primarily a field science. One can describe the effects of fire, drought, predation, or competition in a lecture, but this is no substitute for seeing and experiencing the interactions between species and their environment in a natural setting. This course provides an opportunity for you to be immersed in a field setting and experience the science of ecology first-hand in the beautiful blue waters of the Bahamas. We will spend the first part of the semester at Florida Southern College learning about the history, geology, and ecology of the Bahamas and its marine organisms, then we will travel to the Bahamas to snorkel the reefs of Bimini. The field study portion of the course will focus on sharks and rays and the different environmental and biological factors that structure the ecosystems of Bimini, Bahamas.
